| When they say “Martial arts” the
first few things coming to mind are fancy high
kicks, lots of jumping and flying… Well, just
like seen on a TV screen. If you want to stay
in a dream world than you are welcome to practice
all your katas, kung-fu forms and ninja’ tree
climbing. But than please be sure to avoid any
kind of physical confrontation ‘coz it potentially
can get bloody and dirty. The reality of the street
is a far cry from learning karate forms at the
dojo. But if you choose to stay in a real world
than you better be prepared to what it can throw
at you. Bangkok Fight Club now opened on Soi Asok
got a pretty cool name and offers you just that:
straight to the point realistic fighting training
in MMA (Mixed martial arts) - the combative systems
popularized by the no holds barred fighting competitions
such as UFC and Pride. MMA stresses the importance
of fighting effectively in realistic situations
be it standing up striking, grappling from the
clinch or fighting on the ground. Whether you
want to round off your skills as a martial artist
or just want to get fit and think learning bone-crunching
techniques is an interesting way to do so, Fight
Club is the place for you. |

| History of the Fight Club started
two years ago when Alex and Todd a couple of expats
living in Bangkok met one Sunday morning for some
Jiu Jitsu training at the Thai-Japanese Judo Club.
They both had tried hard to find anyone in Bangkok
who shared their interest in reality combat or
mixed martial arts. Two of them started meeting
regularly for training sessions, sparred and exchanged
techniques. Even though it never advertised, word
got out and new guys started showing up asking
if they could join. Fight Club was born and than
naturally the name came. Now 16 nationalities
are represented at the club. But this Fight Club
isn’t just a bunch of adrenaline-fueled psychos
beating the hell out of each other. Alex explains:
“Well, the first rule of Fight Club (besides the
fact that you can actually talk about it) is respect.
We’re all at different levels of skill and fitness
and the main thing that keeps us here is respect.”

| “We don’t call ourselves a school
or an academy. We’re a club, which means no instructors,
no seniors, and any of the members can teach.
If I’m better at submission techniques then I’ll
share them with you and someone else will help
with takedowns or striking. You can practice every
day if you’re up to it, or just come over when
you feel like a workout.” Brazilian Jiu Jitsu,
submission fighting and street self defense are
on offer at Fight club as well as women’s self
defense courses. |
